SCOPE is an interdisciplinary body of natural and social science expertise focused on global environmental issues, operating at the interface between scientific and decision-making instances.
It is a worldwide network of scientists and scientific institutions developing syntheses and reviews of scientific knowledge on current or potential critical environmental issues.
The overall aims of SCOPE are to:

to cover environmental issues - either global or shared by several nations - in urgent need of interdisciplinary synthesis.'
to act at the interface between the science and decision-making spheres, providing advisors, policy-planners and decision-makers with the analytical tools to promote sound management and policy practices for environmental sustainability.'
to assist in 'sustainable development' by understanding the use of the environment within the three environmental themes:

1. managing societal & natural resources
2. ecosystem processes and biodiversity
3. health & environment'

The aims of UK Working Group are:

to promote UK research which is consistent with the aims of SCOPE
to provide a national forum for environmental science and international scientific networking on sustainability
to highlight trans-national, regional and global issues of relevance to the UK
to help the development of SCOPE as a global network of scientists by involving the best UK science within SCOPE activities
to influence international science by formulating new projects
